Overview
We are seeking a reliable and proactive School Caretaker to oversee the day-to-day maintenance and safety of schools across in the Wirral area. The ideal candidate will have excellent organisational skills, a strong attention to detail, and ideally, experience in site management, however those with a background in a trade or in maintenance will also be considered. As a School Caretaker, you will be responsible for ensuring the school environment is clean, secure, and well-maintained, addressing minor repairs, liaising with external contractors, and supporting the smooth operation of school activities. You will play a key role in creating a safe and welcoming environment for students, staff, and visitors.
Responsibilities
Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to keep the school premises in excellent condition.
Security: Ensure the site is secure, including locking/unlocking buildings, setting alarms, and monitoring security systems.
Health and Safety: Maintain safe environments by conducting regular checks and addressing hazards promptly.
Cleaning: Oversee cleaning activities and maintain hygiene standards across the site.
Facilities Management: Manage and monitor heating, lighting, and other essential utilities.
Groundskeeping: Maintain outdoor areas, including playgrounds, parking lots, and landscaping.
Stock and Supplies: Manage inventory and order cleaning and maintenance supplies as needed.
Support: Assist with setting up and taking down equipment for school events or activities.
Contractor Liaison: Supervise external contractors for specialised repairs or projects.
Emergency Response: Respond to incidents like leaks, damages, or urgent repairs promptly.
Uphold safeguarding responsibilities by promoting the welfare of children and young people, and ensuring all actions align with school policies on child protection and safety.
Experience
Practical Maintenance Skills: Experience with basic repairs, plumbing, carpentry, or electrical work.
Health and Safety Knowledge: Familiarity with regulations, including COSHH and risk assessments.
Organisational Skills: Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritise responsibilities, and work independently.
Attention to Detail: Ensuring facilities are well-maintained and secure at all times.
Groundskeeping Skills: Experience maintaining outdoor spaces like playgrounds, gardens, or sports fields.
Teamwork and Communication: Ability to liaise effectively with staff, contractors, and school leadership.
Problem-Solving Abilities: Quick response to emergencies or unexpected maintenance issues.
Technical Skills: Knowledge of heating, ventilation, and security systems is advantageous.
Flexibility and Reliability: Willingness to adapt to varying schedules, including early mornings, evenings, or occasional weekends.
